Finding Jesus

I was asked a really hard question one day during an interview for my book. I was asked to basically explain how I would help show someone Jesus.

I hate to say it, but I couldn’t find a good enough answer that I was satisfied with. I kept doubting my answer and beating around the bush instead of giving a straight forward answer. How am I supposed to tell someone how they can interact with God and meet him for the first time? How do I help someone become saved and give their life to Jesus? I know how I did it, but how will that benefit them? All these questions have been going through my head and I kept putting this post on the back burning since because I didnt know how I wanted to write it. I keep feeling like I’m supposed to give you this huge thought out answer that will change your life. Sad to tell you, I’m a human just like you. How I found Jesus might not help you at all. You may experience Jesus in a completely different way then I did.

But here’s the deal, the only way I think I can help answer the question of “how to find this Jesus I always talk about” is by simply telling you what I did in hopes to maybe just one of the things will help you in your journey.

There is a big thing we need to establish really quick… You are a sinner, we all are. No one, except Jesus, is not considered a sinner.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)

First things first, go get your Bible. I know I know, everyone throws that in your face. But hear me out. When you meet someone, you want to learn about them. You want to know what they like, who they know are, their hobbies, interests, dislikes, etc. Don’t you think that’s what the Bible’s for? We learn all the things about God, the beginning to the end, and all the between stories that tell us about people who we can usually relate to. Its not this big book with useless information. It will have more valuable information than that inappropriate book you have on your night stand.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus as Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved (Romans 10:9-10)

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household (Acts 16:31)

Second, get yourself to church. I had to find a new church that allowed me to understand and learn information about God that I couldn’t teach myself. I had to put it in my planner every Sunday that I was going to attend church and make it a habbit. I know, you have a busy life and you do not want to add another thing to your schedule. But do you set an alarm and go to work everyday? Do you get up to go do something fun on the weekend? Do you make sure you go to school on time? Then why can you not give one to two hours to God to go to church and learn about him?

Third, if you don’t already pray, start now. Let’s say you started reading your Bible and now you don’t know what to do. This is when you pray and have conversations with God about the next steps in your life. You pray for and about literally anything. This is your time to bug him, ask hard questions, or simply just pray for an open mind. You will find it extremely hard to make it through your journey without prayer. Sometimes prayer is the only thing keeping you together. Think of it like the glue of your salvation. You feel like you cannot believe in someone if you never talk to them or have a relationship, right? So start praying my friend.

Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you (Jeremiah 29:12)

Fourth, here was my big one… Music. What you listen too. You cannot be reading your Bible and praying for God to take over your sin and save you, then listen to Cardi B or Nicki Minaj on your way to work and act like everything is dandy. What you listen to will alter your thinking. You start believing the words you hear and they will manipulate your actions and attitude. I’m not saying you have to listen to slow churchy music that puts you to sleep or makes you dread it. But you need something that is Christian related, weather that be music or a good podcast to educate you in scripture and positive words. Cardi B cannot help you in your salvation, sorry to break it to you.

Fifth, you either need a group, bible study class, or a person to hold you accountable for your studies and relationship with Christ. Even Jesus didn’t do his ministry alone so why should you try to? If you have no one that you can think of or do not feel comfortable with others, find someone, like a Christian counselor, that can help you not only mental, emotionally, but also in your faith journey to help you understand the things going on in your life and how God fits in that equation.

For where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them (Matthew 18:20)

Whether you find God when your happy or when your life is falling apart, the good news is he will accept you know matter what. I found him when I was falling apart and it felt like my life was breaking into pieces. I thought I was going to end up in a crazy house. Instead, I found myself in the house of God being treated like his child. I was able to transform into this person who acts, thinks, and sees things completely different than the me who was lost and broken a few years back. I honestly hope you can find him before you get into that broken place, no one should have to go through hell just to find Jesus. But some words of encouragement, there is always good on the end of something Satan tries to destroy-you will learn that in scripture when you get digging into that bible I talked about.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28)

Once you find Jesus, the battle isn’t over. Satan is going to attack you and try to come after you harder than ever before. As soon as you start actively pursuing God, he panics like a baby… let him. He cannot touch you when you have God fighting for you. Dig in and get closer to God so that he can equip you with the things that Satan cannot amount to.

Honestly, I could keep rambling for a while on this topic but I just wanted to hit the main points I felt were necessary to share.
