Idolatry
What is idolatry? Why is it important in Christianity? Why is idolizing bad?
I think we can agree that we all have things we like and seem to idolize over God and most of the time, we don’t even realize it. There are times we choose something that we love and continue to put that on a higher level than we do God. That is the gist of what idolatry is. When we are choosing to like something more, studying it, being obsessed with it, feeling like that’s the most important thing in our life, etc. those are all examples of what we do that God specifically states is wrong in the Bible. God does not want us to idolize something more than him because then we are saying he isn’t worth our time and is not as important as all the present things we are focused on.
The things of this world are only temporary. People and materialistic things do not go to heaven with you. When someone dies, they literally leave everything behind. Their money stays, their body decomposes, their clothes get sold or given away, their house is no longer theirs, and so forth.
Why are you more obsessed with a person who isn’t even able to hold it together without falling to sin? Why are you more focused on money and buying things that will just break? What makes you think working yourself to death to be a better employee or boss will benefit you for all eternity? Do you think lusting after that person or celebrity is going to bring you fulfillment?
My question is: Why keep your eyes on the earthly things that have no eternal value to you? Why stress about certain situations you have no control over? Did all the stressing change the situation? I’m going to guess probably not. Think about it, If you truly believe in heaven, then you know this world is only temporary. Right?
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Colossians 3:2 NASB
That verse is one of my favorites because it’s a constant reminder from God that those things that may seem intolerable or unimaginable are so small to God. Not that he thinks your feelings are not important, but that stays here, it doesn’t follow you eternally.
If you feel empty inside, like something is missing, or that you can’t seems to hold it together, your priorities are probably not the best they could be and your are idolizing the wrong things. Think about what you are prioritizing your time with.
For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. 1 John 2:16-17 NLT
The world and everything in it is not made to last for eternity. This is a temporary place that we, as humans, go before making it to heaven to be in place with God. There is death all around us and will continue to happen. We do not have control over any of it. No matter how much we stress, and no matter how much we put our focus on someone else, it’s not going to fix us. Nothing in this world can fill our cup to the full extent.
So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols. 1 Corinthians 10:14 NLT
