How do you know?
How do you know if someone is Christian or not? We see them at church or events that might be religious and we think they probably are a believer. What if I told you just because you go to church on Sunday just for the reason you want others to know you went might not make you a Christian? What if I told you acting like church is just another requirement to look good for your community does not make you a Christian? What if I told you that you have to actively seek God? What if I told you that your salvation is not handed to you?
Hold tight guys, this post might make you uncomfortable.
As I am going through my faith journey and getting deeper into the bible I am starting to realize people who I thought were Christians or were strong in their faith are actually not. They do not support the bible and they do not provide biblical evidence to back up what they believe. They have a great show they put on for others and are sure to be at church on Sunday but what fruit is being brought to the table to show they are true believers? Are they truly trying to live like Christ? Are they striving to be better in their lives and show the love of Christ to their family and friends? How do they present themselves at work? Do they treat others with kindness and forgiveness as Christ does us?
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? James 2:14 (NLT)
So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.. James 2:24 (NLT)
Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works. James 2:26 (NLT)
Here’s the deal, when we get to Heaven and present ourselves before Jesus those people will not be standing next to you worried about what Jesus is going to tell you. They will be there for judgment but they won’t worry if you went to church on certain days or not. Jesus will be questioning you about YOU. So many people are worried about who did what or who is with whom. They ask if so and so went to church on Sunday and then judge them for not going. But God is the ultimate judge. How embarrassing will it be to get to Heaven and Jesus says He doesn’t even know you? Unfortunately, that is going to happen to people we know who we thought were Christians.
The book of Matthew has great scriptures that will put this into perspective for us.
Beware of false prophets, who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them but their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. Matthew 7:15-20 (NLT)
He then goes on to say how some who are not showing fruit will say they have done the work of the Lord and expect a golden ticket into Heaven but He has a very strong answer for them.
But I will reply, “I never knew you. Get away from Me, you who break God’s laws.” Matthew 7:23 (NLT)
What we can gather from here is that you can go on missions, do things just to look good to others, join groups that help your community, show up to church on time Sunday, etc. But if you do not have Jesus in your heart and accept the Lord as your savior, you could be the next in line that He will tell you to depart from Him because He never knew you. You cannot be a true Christian but not live your life for Christ. When you accept Jesus into your heart, the Holy Spirit changes you. You will want to strive to live better, stop sinning, repent, and ultimately want to share the gospel to others to help save them.
And then he told them, “Go into the world and preach the good news to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved, but anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. Mark 16:15-16 (NLT)
Stop looking at others thinking they have their life together or think they might be a better Christian. Jesus doesn’t compare us; we are responsible for our own salvation and our own faith. Don’t just show up Sunday just to show your face to the community. You can have a much more fulfilling life when you put in the work for your faith; otherwise it would be dead… right?
