Silence
If you are a parent of young kids, silence is not a good thing. But, silence can be good when we need time to sit, think, and reflect on Jesus. There are good days of silence and peacefulness; then there are days that we think God is silent to us and we do not know how to function. How many times have you sat there and thought that God is being silent to you and it’s not fair? How many times do you feel like you are yelling for Him to help and He isn’t there?
I have had times when I thought God forgot about me and left me in the dark. I felt like no matter what I did he wouldn’t give me answers. I felt as if I was left in this dark place with no noise or light to show me hope. Can you relate?
Last week in my class, I had to do an assignment over Abraham. I had to try to write a discussion over why I thought I could compare to him. Talk about hard. This was a man of “many nations” and was willing to sacrifice his own son for God. He talked to God and made covenants with Him. There wasn’t much that I felt like I could compare to. However, I did learn something about his story that I didnt catch before.
You know how people say each time you read the Bible, you learn something new? When I was reading, I found a new part of the story I didnt catch before. It’s not that I didn’t read it, I just didn’t put it together and piece the timeline together until now. This story showed me how God might feel silent to us based off our own actions.
Abraham was told by God that he and his wife would have a child after years of not being able to bear children. They were both already older and Abraham was in his 70s at this point. Sarah and Abraham tried waited until they decided to take matters into their own hands. Sarah decided that Abraham should have a child with her maid. They chose to have a child on their time instead of God’s. They knew they were getting old and now was the time to be parents. But, did God say they would have a baby with the maid? No. God was very clear when he said Sarah would have the child.
Here’s the catch, read the verses below:
Abram was eight-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. (Genesis 16:16)
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before me and be blameless.” (Genesis 17:1)
Do you notice the gap there with his age? He was one that was talking to God all the time, they made a covenant, and angels would come to him with messages. He chose to take matters into his own hands and he and his wife chose to have a son with the servant instead of being patient. From the time they had Ishmael to the time that God spoke to him again was 13 years… 13. That’s when you know there is a problem.
If you feel like God is far away or not talking to you at this time, think about what your putting into the relationship first before getting upset at Him. Sure, you might think your doing things right, but where is your heart? Abraham was still doing some things for God, but he made a choice and that had consequences. His consequence was not getting to hear from God for 13 years. He was told he would have a son, so he chose to do it his way, now he gets silence. After the time passes, God came back and told Abraham again that he would have a son.
See, God tells us things more than we realize, we are the ones choosing not to hear Him or wait for His timing. We try to blame Him and say He isn’t listening to us or He’s giving us the silent treatment. Which, his silence may be true if we are not following the correct path he told us to go on. I understand things seem unfair and it makes us uncomfortable but don’t you think Abraham and Sarah thought it was crazy to be having a baby in their 100’s?
The point I’m trying to make is that you shouldn’t assume God has left you or is silent in your most desperate times. He is always working things out for HIS timeline and not yours. He never left us and doesn’t plan to start now. He might just be sitting back waiting for you to decide if your going to listen the next time He calls you. Will you choose to listen or give Him the silent treatment?
