Here I am
If someone came up to you and asked you to do something, what would you say? If they say they need a small favor, do you volunteer and go for it? Do you ask for more details? Where? Who? How? When? Most people, including myself usually ask a little bit more details regarding what is being asked of us. Usually I am happy to do what they need but I like to know what I am getting into just to be sure I can complete the task they are asking for.
What would be crazy is for us to automatically just say, “Sure, I can do that!” Or “I’ll get on that right away!” How life is going now, we don’t have time to stop everything and go do something that it not involved in our daily routine. Honestly, some people will not go do something that does not benefit them or help them move up somehow.
What I want to focus on is the fact that there are multiple scenarios and people in the bible that tell God, “Here I am” when he calls their name. They did not ask what He needed, they did not ask what is expected of them, and most importantly, they did not ask details to make sure they can do the task. They knew that God would provide whatever they needed. They knew that God would lead them to their destination and would give them the necessary strength to do what is needed for the quest.
Let’s look at a few of the scenarios:
Abraham (Genesis 22:1)
We just talked about him in my last blog. God called Abraham by his name and was about to give him the biggest test any parent could ever imagine. Abraham was faithful and he answered with “Here I am” and had no hesitation on what was about to be asked of him (Genesis 22:1). Once God told him, he did it without asking anything further.
Jacob (Genesis 31:11)
Jacob had a dream/vision that God called him to leave the current place he was at because he wasn’t being treated fair. God asked him to take some of his things and just leave the place all together without looking back. Jacob didn’t know what was going to be asked. He just answered with, “Here I am” when he heard God call him. He then did what was asked of him.
Moses (Exodus 3:4)
This is a very important part of the bible. This is where God called on Moses through a burning bush and Moses answered, “Here I am.” He didn’t know he was about to be called to rescue Gods people out of Egypt and bring them to the Promised Land. What a huge responsibility I couldn’t image being asked. Moses even questions God asking why he chose him. But, he did as God asked and encountered a lot of hardship on the way but God brought him through it.
Samuel (1Samuel3:4)
Samuel was a young boy being called by God. He heard his name and immediately answered with, “Here I am” but was thinking it was Eli that he was with. Eli told him to answer God and it wasn’t him calling his name. With some help from Eli, Samuel answered God. He didnt ask what God wants, but instead said, ”your servant is listening.” That is powerful, to be able to say you’re a servant of God and listening to whatever He may call you to do. He didnt say, “hey its me, what do you need?” No, he was willing to say he is a servant and willing to do whatever God is going to throw at him.
Isaiah (Isaiah 6:8)
Isaiah had a vision and saw a group of seraphim praising God, while they were worshiping God, Isaiah realized he was unclean and did not feel worthy of God presents. One of the seraphim (like angels) touched him with burning coal and told him his sins were forgiven. After, God calls and asks who he can send and who would actually go for him. Isaiah immediately says, ”Here I am, send me!” He had thought he wasn’t good enough, he thought he wasn’t clean enough to be in the presents of the Lord. After his sins were forgiven, he says he will go and do whatever God needs. He was willing to stop everything and take on what God needed, not asking questions, just volunteering himself to go.
Ananias (Acts 9:10)
Ananias is a brave man. He had a vision from God and when God called his name, Ananias said, “Here I am.” God then told him to go to where Saul was (known as a terrible person that killed Christians) and heal his sight. Ananias is pretty much like, “God you know he hates people that love and talk about you and you want me to go heal him in your name…?” God gives him some security and Ananias goes and does exactly what God says. He helped the man who would eventually write half of the new testament.
I tell you this because I know we will all have a time in our life that we need to be ready for when God calls us. We need to be able to drop everything and say, “Here I am.” God has really been placing the book of Isaiah on my mind lately and once I started doing some doing some digging I think the message I needed to learn is to not ask questions and just be willing to say, “I am here for whatever you need me to do, Lord.” We need to stop being nosey and weighing out our benefits and risks when God brings something to our attention. We need to stop asking if, when, but, how, and where. God didn’t give those people any information; he first wanted their attention to know that they would care and is interested into what He was going to say. He wanted to know where their faith stood.
Friends, we need to be willing to look up and say, “Here I am” when God calls our name. Don’t take a day to think about it, he is the God of all and we are put on this world to complete His work and do as He asks. Don’t let your emotions or people’s opinions alter your obedience to Christ. He is the creator and the ultimate judge. Have an open heart and be willing to answer when you are called.
Much love,
Charity
