Friends
During the Easter holiday, I decided to read through the four Gospels, specifically about the last supper, crucifixion, and the resurrection. I wanted to compare the different writer’s perception of the events. Each one has small things they mention that the others don’t. John and Matthew were present so their interpretation seem different to me than when I read Luke or Mark. But, of course, they all have such great information and are so knowledgeable.
The main story I want to bring up is found in Luke. He is known for being a physician so his writing style is very technical and I feel it is easily understood. Luke, of course, discusses the important parts and information of the last supper and crucifixion. The time frame after the last supper and before Jesus is crucified is a lot of back and forth of the people wanting him killed but leaders are having a hard time justifying it.
So, picture this with me. Jesus already had the last supper with his disciples, Judas betrayed him, and now he is arrested and being questioned by the council of elders. Some discussion is going on and Jesus tells them he is the Son of God (Luke 22:70). The council takes him to Pilate, who was considered the governor, and they tried to convince him that he was a “bad” person because he was saying that he was a King. Pilate doesn’t seem to care much. The council kept trying to prove their point to him and mentioned the places Jesus had taught at. Once he heard Galilee, he sent Jesus to Herod (governor/king of Galilee) to deal with him. Well, Herod was a snarky man so he basically mocked Jesus, dressed him up, and sent him back to Pilate. Jesus was getting thrown around like a hot potato at this point.
But, here is the scripture that stuck out to me that I found fascinating:
Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that day; for before they had been enemies with each other. Luke 23:12 NASB
Did you catch that? Herod and Pilate hated each other. They did not speak and they just threw Jesus back and forth to each other because they wanted the other to have to deal with him. Jesus hardly spoke to the two of them. But his presents and his arrest mended their relationship and they became friends. They were enemies, then out of know where, became friends… all because of Jesus.
Think about it, do you have an enemy? Or someone you hate? How do you feel about mending the relationship? Would you just magically become friends with them if they didn’t help you in a hard time? I think it’s hard to just, at the drop of a hat, forget all the stuff that made us enemies with people and just become friends.
Jesus fixed relationships all throughout the Bible. In this story, he didn’t even have to speak and he did it. He didn’t have to perform a miracle in front of them to change their mind. He wasn’t even crucified yet or rose from the grave and it still happened.
But we know, being a believer in Christ isn’t easy, right? People constantly question us, watch us, sometimes mock us. Satan loves to attack us believers especially as we are following God’s will for our life.
What I want you to remember is, Jesus can restore any broken relationship you may have. It’s up to you though to believe he can and accept the healing that comes with it. He won’t do all the work for you. This verse gave me hope and reminds me that, even in the crazy things of this world, there is still room for mending relationships and becoming friends with people we normally wouldn’t think possible.
