Come on, Barbie…

First, I want to just say that I know nothing about the new Barbie movie. I don’t know if its good or bad, what the story line is, or anything in between. But since I am hearing people talk about it and have seen some photos for promos, I feel like I should get this off my chest.

This isn’t to bash the movie or promote it. I just wanted to make something clear real quick. I know the younger generation is going to probably be the main audience. Which brings my concern… They are the most vulnerable ones to be watching it.

What I mean is, most of the girls watching it are going to want to be like Barbie. They are going to think they need to have the perfect long blonde hair, the perfect (plastic) body, clothes that are expensive, the best of friends, and of course, the necessity of having a Ken. Which again, I’m not saying it’s a bad movie or anything, I played with Barbies my whole childhood.

My concern is that girls who may not feel happy in their own bodies, are going to watch it. Then, they are going to think they have to look like Barbie and act a certain way. If they are not confident in themselves or if they have low self-esteem, they are going to start chasing the materialistic things that Barbie makes a big deal.

They are going to think they cannot find their perfect Ken in this world if they have different color hair or are made with a different body type. They also may even think that it’s a necessity to date just because they don’t want to be lonely.

This is why it’s so important for us girls to understand who made us and find our identity in Christ before conforming our identity to this world. That is chasing an empty void that wont be filled on this earth.

If you are stuck thinking you need to make your body a perfect copy of Barbie, you will sadly be disappointed. You won’t get the pretty and fake life that came with the movie, why? Because it’s fake.

If you’re constantly searching this world for the fulfillment that can only be found in Christ, then you’re always going to end up being empty handed and disappointed.

Paul tells us in the book of Ephesians that we are “masterpieces” that Gad made. A masterpiece isn’t something that was screwed up. It’s Marvelous. Perfect. Exquisite.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 NLT

Genesis says that everything that God made was good. That’s you and I, included. You don’t need the fake hair, pink clothes, and high heels to get attention. You’re perfect the way you are. The way God made you.

“So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 NLT

If you search for fulfillment in Him, your cup will always be full and you will never be disappointed.

This is your reminder, if you or someone you know, are going to watch the movie, then do just that. Watch it and do not compare it to yourself or your current situations. If you know you are solid in your identity and faith, then make sure the other girls you know, or if you have a daughter, are confident and understand that its just a movie and she is made perfect the way she is.
A masterpiece made in God’s image.

Much Love,
Charity
