Bible
Do you read your bible? If so, how often? If not, have you considered it?
I know looking at it or skimming through the pages is really intimidating if you do not know what you are reading. Up until this last year, I had no idea what was in the bible or what I was reading. I only knew scriptures from Pinterest or random things people posted on social media (sad, I know). I learned some from going to church over the years but I didn’t have an actual church home until recently. I attempted to “read the bible straight through” and let me tell you, that is not going to help you very much. I mean some people can focus and understand that but if you’re like me, that didn’t happen. I hardly made it through Genesis because I was so confused. If you do get lucky and make it through Genesis, once you hit Leviticus, you probably won’t make it much farther than that.
The best way for me to learn SOME of the bible was doing a bible study over the whole bible as a story. I did “Seamless” by Angie Smith and it was the best bible study I have done over the bible. It has a lot of information to learn in a short time so I have had to do it again just to make sure I grasp all of the information. You do not have to do this study fast, you can do it at your own pace. Its geared towards women but it’s not only meant for a group of women to do. Men need to learn too, right?
I can’t sit here and act like I am a bible scholar and that I know everything there is to know about Jesus. I have so much more learning to do that will take me years and through my life before I actually understand it to the full content it’s made for. But every time you read it, every verse you read, every story you dig deeper in, you learn more things about jesus and his people and Gods plan for our lives than you probably ever knew.
Fun Facts
Tower of Babel Genesis 11:1-9 NKJV
After the flood, God said to fill the earth with people and multiple. Humanity at that time decided they wanted to build a town and they would make a tower that would reach to the heavens and they could make a name for themselves. They were focused on staying together and disobeying what God had planned.
At this time, the people spoke one language and one speech. Since they did not do what God asked he confused their language so they were unable to understand each other. This caused them to group together with people that spoke their language and they settled all along the world.
Hence.. We have different languages all over the world.
Noah Intoxicated Genesis 9:20-23 NKJV
Noah became a farmer and grew a vineyard. He drank an increased amount of wine and became drunk. The bible says he was “uncovered in his tent” when his son found him. His sons came and covered him up without looking at his body.
How crazy is that, the man who built an ark, saved animals and his family, helped repopulate the word, made wine, and got so intoxicated he stripped off his clothes? I forget sometimes that the people of the bible are humans just like us. Its fascinating to learn.
Tithing
There are a few places in the bible that talks about tithing. First, in the old testament it says how we should tithe 10% of our income. The New testament actually changes that. Jesus came and changes some of the ten commandments because he was going to be our final sacrifice. He did not change them all but tithing was one that he altered. He said to give what you can, whether that be more or less than 10%. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” If we are willing to give up 10% or more if able back to God, it shows where our hearts are and that we are understanding that God is in control of everything in our lives, including finances.
I just slightly talked about 3 different stories in the bible, there are so much more you can learn and discover by reading it yourself. And the best part is that its Gods living word, which means we all can grasp something new from it that no one else can because its between us and God. Go get you a bible and start reading.
Much love,
Charity
